Backup and Restore your Blogger Posts

Posted by Agent Deepak | Wednesday, June 04, 2008 | Comments

I have a big talk about a small software. This software is for bloggers on Blogger platform. It is a small utility called Blogger Backup Utility.

As the name suggest it is a backup utility for Blogger. So what does it backup? The Blogger Backup utility is intended to be a simple utility to backup to local disk your Blogger posts. Using the GData C# Library, the utility will walk backward in time, from your latest post to your last, saving each post to a local Atom/XML file. Unlike other blogging platforms, Blogger does not feature a backup facility. Thus software is very important. This is very good software to backup all your posts if you are on Blogger platform. It will even backup your comments. It is also a restoration utility as well. It can restore back all your posts easily. Currently backing up comments is not supported but in future it will be done.

This utility is developed at CodePlex, a Microsoft's open source project hosting web site. It is developed and created by Greg Duncan of Simi Valley, California, United States. This is free software. Below are some stats about this software with a screenshot of this utility program.
Name: Blogger Backup Utility
Type: Free
Latest Version: v1.0.9.23 Beta (updated on Apr 02 2008)
File Size: 790 KB
Downloads: 1722

They have some Future Plans like.
1. Add comment restore
2. Add additional output formats (HTML, PDF, WordML, etc) in either unformatted/raw and "As it looks like on the blog" versions
3. Add picture back up

My Reviews and Experience
This software is in Beta (there could be unknown bugs and all bugs are not sorted out yet). This the first time I am trying a Beta version of software. I tried this software on my experimental blog. It was able to back up all the 4 posts. There were some errors initially but finally it worked well. The .xml backup files contained all the required data including labels, published dates and time etc. Now for experimenting I deleted a post on my experimental blog and tried restoration of that post. I was not successful may be due to slow connection or because I was not using the latest version of the utility. But I was able to do restoration manually. I just copied the content (with HTML) from the .xml backup file and the post was restored to normal. Well now it’s your call. Blogger powered blogs do not expire, and will not be deleted from the system if they are abandoned. But if you accidentally delete your blog or for some reason your blog becomes inaccessible, it would certainly be reassuring that you have a local backup of all your posts and can restore it if required. You can try this software. At least do the backup stuff.

You can download the latest version of the Blogger Backup Utility here or visit Homepage.

Notes: If you use Blogger Backup Utility restore your Blogger posts, you will be limited to 50 posts per day. This limit is imposed by Blogger to prevent spamming, and ensure the smooth-running of the API.
